A Child is Born

Every year the Christmas story captures the imagination of millions. How often we have heard it related or been entertained by the children’s nativity plays, and yet we never tire of it. We love to think about that little baby peacefully sleeping in the manger or tenderly held in his mother’s arms. The unusual circumstances have given it a romance all of its own.

Of course, the birth of a baby inevitably attracts visitors, and this case is no exception. But these are not relatives, but total strangers! Why would hardened shepherds bother to leave their sheep on the hillside, or what could possibly have motivated wise men to make such an incredibly long journey, just to see a baby? Who is this child?

No ordinary child

It is clear he is no ordinary child. This little bundle, this “baby Jesus”, is none other than the Son of God, the Creator of the universe! No wonder it was angels who first made the announcement!

Hope of the world

Why then did he come? Because he loved this world – even this tragic world of lost men and women who have gone astray from God, who have been deluded by the devil and become enslaved in false and empty lifestyles; a world without hope, in the darkness of despair.

He came as a shepherd looking for his lost sheep - to save helpless and hopeless human beings. As the angel Gabriel told Joseph:

You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21)

His coming was a shaft of glorious light into our darkness; the promise of mercy and forgiveness; the announcement of a way back to God; and the opening the gate of heaven!

This meant making the biggest sacrifice possible - laying down his life. He was the only person in history who was born to die. It was only by dying for our sins that he could discharge us from liability. Not only this, but he also triumphantly rose again and now reigns as the Saviour-King

Good news!

This really is good news! Jesus Christ has brought us hope, no matter what kind of people we have been.

Maybe there are things on your conscience just now. You are tormented and cannot rest. The past haunts you. You know that you have offended God as well as man. Come to Jesus Christ and he will fully forgive you and make you new.

Perhaps you feel trapped in a fruitless life. You are a slave to drink, drugs, pornography, self-image or to the endless pursuit of this world’s things. Jesus Christ can set you free and change your life.

Some of you may be fearful of the future. Maybe you have lost a loved one or just sense the passing of the years. You know in your heart that you are not fit to face God. Jesus came to give us peace with God and he promises eternal life to those who believe in him.

Jesus is God coming into the world in awesome love to save sinners, and he can save you (for every one of us needs him). To ignore him is to spurn the love of our Creator and King. To receive him is life and peace!
