The Big Question

Have you ever been wowed by a spectacular sunset or a magnificent view of majestic mountains or a rugged coastline?

Have you ever been amazed when you see beautiful flowers grow from nothing but a tiny brown seed?  Or maybe you have stood in awe at a clear night sky as you gaze at the thousands of stars stretching over countless light years, while realising this is only a tiny corner of a vast universe?

For those of you who are more scientifically minded, have you ever been staggered by the orderliness of the universe with its laws and mathematical precision?

Have you then thought, ‘There must be someone behind all this?’

 The meaning of life

Or maybe you have been chasing one ambition after another each time thinking that, if only you can achieve it, you will have found the secret of true fulfilment. Perhaps you have searched for it by making money, the party life, success, family or even fame, and each time  you have found that the satisfaction it brings quickly fades and you need something else.

Have you then said to yourself, ‘There must be more to life than this’? You sense that there must be an ultimate Answer giving meaning to life - God perhaps?

 Searching for God

So, if there is a God, how can we get to know him? How can we relate to him? Or if he is the Creator of everything, is he just too distant?

Over the centuries people have tried all kinds of ways of trying to get to God. They have tried religious rituals, meditation, self-inflicted suffering and deep philosophical reasoning (i.e. thinking very hard about him!). But we can’t reach him in any of these ways. We need him to come down to us. And he has done just that by coming into this world as a man, Jesus Christ.

 God coming to us

One of the Bible writers, Mark, begins his account of the life of Jesus with these words, ‘The beginning of the gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.’

Mark calls Jesus ‘the Son of God’. That doesn’t mean that he is something less than God. He is saying that he is God – a staggering claim! The good news is that God has come to us in Jesus Christ so that he can bring us into a loving and eternal relationship with himself. We have lost touch with him, but he has come to find us!

You might be relieved to know that Christianity is not just about going to church with all its associated traditions. It is about a restored relationship with God.

The church is ideally the ‘family’ getting together.

Finding God is a supremely important matter, yet many people don’t take the trouble to find out. Will you?

Yours, Colin

We invite you to find out more at a series of Bible study meetings called “Christianity Explored” that we plan to run this Autumn. This article is based on the video for the first session. It will be informal, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions (and no singing!). You will not be asked to commit yourself to the whole series – you can stop at any point if you wish
