St. Mary’s Church, Grundisburgh

 May 2011

News for the parishes of Boulge, Burgh, Grundisburgh and Hasketon

In the weeks after Easter we read at every service from the Book of Acts of how the early Christian community lived in the period after the resurrection.  In all of our living there are always choices, and I am indebted to a Scottish church called Abbotsford for sharing on the web, some of the material they write for use in their services, and this reflection on the choices that lie in living the “risen life” – a phrase we pray in the prayer after receiving communion.

We can’t believe in resurrection without believing things can change.

So we can live with the status quo
Or we can live with resurrection

We can’t believe in resurrection without getting your hands dirty making it happen

So we can keep the peace
or we can make peace

We can’t believe in resurrection without journeying to new and impossible places

So we can ‘not rock the boat’
or we can step out the boat

We can’t believe in resurrection without being noticed

So we can withdraw and keep our heads down
or we can stand out with our heads up

We can’t believe in resurrection without speaking against all that brings death

So we can turn a blind eye
or we can be true witnesses

We can’t believe in resurrection without breaking indifference

So we can keep silence
or we can keep vigil

We can’t believe in resurrection without calling to account the way things are

So we can just accept
or we can always question

We can’t believe in resurrection without sharing life with those who need it most

We can learn which side our bread is buttered on
or we can break bread with others

We can’t believe in resurrection without knowing it changes everything that was once impossible

We can keep the status quo
or we can live with resurrection

A Quiet Day - May 10th

What might that be? – well the clue is in the title – an opportunity to be quiet for a few hours from 10.00-3.00pm – to take time to draw close to God.

During the day there will one or two short talks, and then the chance to go off and explore the gardens of Earl Soham Old Rectory, or go for a walk, there are a number of footpaths close by, with circular walks of between 30 mins to an hour; or you can snuggle up on a settee, or read in the Library, make a cuppa when you want to, or go and enjoy the quiet of the church which is in the grounds. It’s your day, to be quiet in your way. If you want to bring things to draw with or paint, that’s great, or your Ipod or MP3 to listen to music so be it. If you want to talk Graham and I will be available for that.

There is no charge, we ask you to bring your own picnic lunch, drinks are on the house!

Numbers are limited to 12 people, so that we are not on top of each other, but it is a big rambling house, kindly lent to us by friends. Please give me a ring either to find out more or to book your place. 01473 735183

 Christian Aid Week

This is our chance to help the very poorest people in the world; many of whom have to live on less than a £1 a day.

Christian Aid run many innovative projects across the world giving people the opportunity to earn a decent living and providing them with some hope for the future.

If you can help collect or count the money at the end or simply put up a poster in your window to promote the week please contact me.

Many thanks
