St. Mary’s Church, Grundisburgh

 September 2010

News for the parishes of Boulge, Burgh, Grundisburgh and Hasketon

When I was a child and on holiday I was taken round numerous churches by my parents. I always tried out the pulpits for size and gave an impromptu sermon and I would often try the font out too. All of my dolls and teddies were baptised either in the kitchen sink or in fonts around the country.

We are delighted in Grundisburgh that in the first two weeks of September, 7 children will be baptised and welcomed into the family of the Church. Those being baptised on Sept 12th will be the last children to be baptised in the font in its current position. On Sept 13th work will begin to move it to the south aisle, thus allowing us to use the space at the west end of the church for welcoming people, serving refreshments and holding small meetings.

We have been fortunate in receiving a Lottery Fund grant of £10,000 towards the work, which in total should cost c. £15,000, the remainder of the money has come from a bequest from the late Rev’d Thursfield, at one time Rector of Grundisburgh. Once this work is complete, we will begin to re-order the west end and provide community meeting space along with the ability to serve refreshments, and storage facilities.

We are indebted to the planning group who has worked on this project for over 4 years and especially to Peter Brunning who has chaired the group with patience, graciousness and incisiveness.

Hospitality and welcome are key elements of the Church’s ministry. During September and October we will be encouraging you all to “bring a friend” to church, as part of the national initiative “Back to Church”. It was felt that Harvest Festivals were a good time to encourage new people to join us and welcome back those who haven’t been able to be with us for a while.

At Burgh on Saturday September 18th there will be a Harvest Supper, prior to the Sunday morning service on the 19th; at Boulge refreshments will be served as part of their Harvest celebrations on September 26th. In both Grundisburgh and Hasketon, Harvest lunches will be held on their festival days in October.

In the words of one of my favourite hymns “Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live,  ……..all are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place”

Open the Book

This is the title of a project taking place all over the country bringing Bible stories to life in primary schools, through simple dramatic interpretations of the biblical stories as written in The Lion Storytelling Bible.

We have now been performing in Grundisburgh School for a year, and been received with great acclaim by the children. If you would like to join us, acting, reading, making props, we would love to hear from you.

Speak to Sandra Billings, Sheila Brechin Molly Smith, Jenny Taylor or Mollie Bolton . First rehearsal Sept 13th 9.30am either in the Parish Room or church.
